The Gainsborough Trinity re-build continues as manager Dave Frecklington unveiled 25-year-old midfielder Johnathan Williams as the club`s latest recruit.
Based in Sheffield, the creative midfielder will be known to long-standing Trinity supporters, having previously been in and around the team during the run to the FA Trophy semi-finals and the club`s ‘almost’ moment in the then Conference North play-offs.
Having previously joined Trinity on leaving Scunthorpe United at 18, Williams was in and out of the side and ended up leaving to get valuable game time under his belt.
“I enjoyed my time at Gainsborough, but I wanted to play regular football to develop my game,” Williams said. “I initially went to Buxton, but then moved to Belper Town and I have been there for two and a half years now and I’ve made more than 150 appearances for them.”
On the back of an outstanding personal return for the Nailers, in which Williams hit 20 goals from midfield, the ex-Iron youngster is ready to show the National League North what they have been missing out on, with the two-footed, ball playing midfielder certainly up for the challenge of stepping back up.
“I like to mix my game up, get on the ball and create things, I’ve enjoyed taking set pieces from a young age, but I know I am going to have to do both sides of the game playing in the middle of the park. I am really happy to be here and just can’t wait to get started!
“The manager at Belper, Charlie Palmer, was really supportive and encouraging when I told him about the offer and in truth it was a move I couldn’t turn down! I enjoyed my time at Belper, but I’m ready to step up and show people what I can do.”
Frecklington said: “I’m delighted to agree terms with Johnathon Williams from Belper Town. He is another player I’ve admired for a long time, he is well known to Gainsborough supporters after being at the club previously.
“He took the decision to drop down the levels to play regularly and develop his game. And even though he is still only 25, he’s technically brilliant. His passing range is frightening and is also something of a dead ball specialist. Johnathan comes on the back of an outstanding season for him personally, scoring 20 goals from midfield! He gives us a different dimension to our play.
“I am sure Johno is ready to step back up the ladder with a point to prove and his character fits into what I’m building at Gainsborough. He has an excellent attitude and is a fantastic addition to the group”.
