NWCFL Premier Division side West Didsbury & Chorlton have seen their young forward Carlos Mendes Gomes earn a professional deal, as he moves to League Two Morecambe.
A 19-year-old attacking talent who spent time in the youth ranks at Atlético Madrid, Mendes has been making a big impression since moving to Manchester. His performances for West Didsbury & Chorlton led to him winning Young Player of the Season and Under-18s Player of the Season in 2016/17.
Born in Yeumbel, Senegal, he grew up in Spain and after impressing on trial at Morecambe in the reserves recently, he has now earned a one-year deal. Like Morecambe’s other signing, 20-year-old Lamin Jagne, Mendes has come through the Development Centre based at The Manchester College, which is run by Darren Finch and Bill Prendergast.
Prendergast said: “I haven’t seen anything like Carlos Mendes in all my years of developing players. He does things differently. He plays in a way that opens up defences and has an eye for goal.”
Carlos Mendes Gomes added: “I’m looking forward to the new season and I hope it brings blessings and I achieve my targets for the club.”
He also said on Twitter: ‘Really happy and delighted for signing with @ShrimpsOfficial Thanks for everyone that has supported me thru the journey…Credits to Bill, Finchy, Jarrad and the Manchester college staff for helping us to get where we are now !!! Hard work starts now with my mate @LaminJagne8′
