TeamSnap ‘Search for a Giantkiller’ club Welling United will hope to make it into the FA Cup First Round as they host Whitehawk on Saturday.
The brings together two clubs struggling in the lower reaches of the Vanarama National League South this season, but that is not all they have in common.
Just twelve months ago both clubs were celebrating as they made it into the “proper” rounds of the FA Cup as part of eye-catching cup runs.
The Wings saw off Grays Athletic after a replay to set up an away tie in the First Round at Evo-Stik Northern Premier League club Barwell. A 2-0 win in Leicestershire sent them within one win of a potential tie against a Premier League giant.
However, their run was brought to an end with a 5-0 hammering at SkyBet League Two side Carlisle United.
The Hawks saw off an in-form Poole Town to reach the First Round last season, then pulled off one of the shocks of the round as they beat Lincoln City 5-3 in a thrilling tie.
The second round saw them up against Dagenham and Redbridge and the tie would go to a televised replay, with the Hawks unfortunate to lose by the odd goal in five. With that defeat went their chances of a historic trip to Goodison Park, with the winners of the replay knowing they would face Premier League side Everton.
The tie is actually the first of two meetings inside a week for the two clubs, with the Hawks travelling to face Welling in the National League South just seven days after their FA Cup meeting.
Wings boss Mark Goldberg will be hoping they can continue where they left off in the Third Round Qualifying as they dished out a 7-1 hammering to Swindon Supermarine, with striker Adam Coombes plundering a double hat-trick in a remarkable performance.
Now Coombes will hope he can fire the Wings into the First Round proper as they welcome Whitehawk on Saturday
