Boreham Wood have announced the signing of experienced centre-half Matt Paine from league rivals Braintree Town.
The 28-year-old, who often played in central midfield for Braintree under Danny Cowley last season, has clocked up over 175 games for the Iron.
Paine joins the Wood after narrowly seeing Braintree miss out on a trip to Wembley, when losing out to eventual Promotion Final winners Grimsby Town 2-1 after extra-time of their semi-final second leg.
Paine has been an instrumental member of the Braintree squad that have established themselves at National League level.
His performances last season in both in the centre of defence and in central midfield have, according to Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard: “Been considerable and a major factor in Braintree achieving their best ever finish of third in the National League”.
On getting his man, Garrard said: “I’m delighted to have secured Matt`s signature. His experience, ability and versatility will serve us well. It’s a signature that I’ve targeted since the season came to an end and I’m again very grateful to our chairman for backing me on this.
“Though we did have a talented squad last season, I always felt we needed one or two additional leaders to help get us over the line in certain games. In Painey, Kenny Davis, who we signed a few weeks ago and with the likes of Joe Devera, Dave Stephens, Danny Woodards, Ben Nunn and Conor Clifford, that problem will now solve itself”.
Meanwhile, Wood have announced that three of their players under 24, who were offered re-engagement terms, have not accepted the club`s offers.
So as such, strikers Junior Morias, Jordan Chedozie and midfielder Billy Clifford, are as per the terms of re-engagement, now free to talk to other clubs.
