Defender Matty Douglas is fast proving himself to be one of Workington Reds’ top goal scorers this season.

Joint manager Lee Andrews praised the tenacity of the youngster who has made the right-back berth his own this season. Douglas collected his ninth goal of the season on Monday as Reds beat Lancaster City 2-0 and Andrews said he has been a consistently good performer this term.

Originally a centre back Douglas slotted into the right-back position after the departure of Jake Simpson and has been a regular ever since.

“Defensively we all know how good it is but it’s difficult when you see the centre backs we have in our squad, we’ve got four really good centre backs competing for two places,” said Andrews.

“Then we thought right back was going to be a problem position when Simmo left us which is why we got Phil McLuckie in to play at right back. But Dougie has done so well since he got in there that Phil hasn’t been playing right back and it has freed him up to play in midfield.”
