York City goalkeeper Ryan Whitley has signed a new two-year deal with the club.
York-born Whitley, 19, is a product of the club’s academy and made his first-team debut against Southport last month before keeping his place for the remaining four games of the season.
“I am very happy to sign and it’s the right move for me at my age,” Whitley told the club’s official website. “It was a big decision. I played in the last five games so it was a case of ‘what’s the right path for me?’
“I had a couple of clubs sniffing around but nothing came in,” he admitted. “Two promotions in two years is now the aim and, personally, I just want to be ‘number one’ playing week-in, week-out for York.
“Whatever club you are at, no-one is guaranteed the No.1 shirt,” he added. “But when I come back for pre-season training my mind is set on being the No.1.”
