Sean McAllister says he is ‘pleasantly surprised’ by the standard of play at his new club York City. The former Sheffield Wednesday and Scunthorpe United midfielder, 30, has dropped down two divisions to join the Minstermen on loan from Grimsby Town and is likely to get his first taste of football in Vanarama National League North on Saturday against Blyth Spartans at Bootham Crescent (kick-off 3pm).

Speaking after his debut for City in the FA Trophy defeat at Kidderminster, McAllister said: “I have been pleasantly surprised by the standard of play. At times, we moved the ball better than what I have been used to in League Two.

“The most important thing is the league this year and – looking at how we finished the Kidderminster game – there is no reason why we can’t go and do some good things. When we conceded, our heads seemed to go down slightly, but we reacted well in the second half and I think it will stand us in good stead.”
