Trialist Joe Tait was on target as York City secured a 1-1 draw against Championship side Leeds United in Thursday’s pre-season friendly at Bootham Crescent

Centre-back Tait, who rejected a new deal at Spennymoor Town this summer, gave City the lead with a 24th minute header from a Sean Newton corner.

He was substituted at the interval but afterwards manager Martin Gray said: “He has done well, we have lost Tom Allan with an injury in pre-season, and competition for places is healthy.”

Substitute Sam Dolby equalised for Leeds in the 57th minute but the result and the performance was still a source of great encouragement for City supporters.

Leeds’ side included former City striker Ryan Edmondson, who was sold to the Championship club after making his first team debut last season – and York-born midfielder Jack Clarke.

Other notable faces in the Leeds side were summer signing Lewis Baker, who is on loan from Chelsea, Japanese international midfielder Yosuke Ideguchi, and England under-21 internationals Ronaldo Vieira and Tom Pearce.
